Madrid, Spain’s vibrant capital, perfectly blends lively city life with beautiful parks. Picturesque in every season, it is one of Europe’s most captivating and popular capital cities. A 3-4 day trip is ideal to explore Madrid’s main highlights. However, if you’d like to fully experience the city, including its theme parks and sporting events, a 5-6 day stay is highly recommended. Hotel

The most recommendable neighbourhood for a hotel whilst staying in Madrid is Gran Via, in the Malasana neighbourhood . This is the main street of Madrid and has numerous metro and bus stations that will link you with the rest of the city. This is also the main shopping street of Madrid, so if shopping is a main priority, then having a hotel that is within walking distance from this shopping district is ideal. Some hotels in this area include Hotel Regente and Hostal Inn Madrid

If you prefer a quieter neighbourhood, consider staying in Barrio de las Letras or La Latina. When choosing your accommodation, it’s always best to ensure your hotel is close to a metro station making it easier to reach the rest of Madrid.

Main Tourist Attractions

Madrid is home to countless attractions that make every visit to this beautiful city truly worthwhile. To help you make the most of your trip, these sights are organised into sections based on their location and category.

Centro

The Centro district is the heart of Madrid, where many of the city’s most famous attractions, lively plazas and historic streets can be found.

    1. Puerta del Sol – One of the busiest and most recognisable squares in Madrid. It is home to the iconic clock tower atop the Real Casa de Correos, where locals gather every New Year’s Eve to welcome the year with the traditional twelve grapes.

    1. Basilica San Francisco El Grande – This 13th century basilica boasts the largest dome in Spain and fourth largest in Europe. The church is open from Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 10:30 am, and on Sunday from 10 am – 1:30 pm, and 6:30 pm to 8 pm. The museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, and from 4 pm to 5:30 pm in Winter, and from Tuesday to Friday from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm in the Summer months. The admission is €6 for Adults and the reduced price is €3.50, with free entry on Thursdays.

    1. Palacio Real de Madrid – The official residence of the Spanish royal family, this magnificent palace is a must-see in Madrid.     1. Catedral de Santa Maria la Real de la Almudena – Located right next to the Royal Palace, this impressive Catholic cathedral features stunning architecture and a beautiful interior. It is open Monday to Sunday from 10 am to 8:30 pm from September to June, and from 10 am to 9 pm in July and August. Entrance is free, but a €1 donation is requested per person.

    1. Plaza de Espana – This popular and picturesque square is a pedestrian-friendly area that connects the Royal Palace with the bustling Gran Via shopping street.

    1. Templo de Debod – This ancient Egyptian temple was built around the 2nd century BC, and in the 1960s was gifted to Spain by the Egyptian government and was then rebuilt in Madrid. The entrance is free, but tickets should be reserved from the official website.

Retiro Park and Nearby Highlights

Retiro Park is Madrid’s most famous green area. It is perfect for a relaxing stroll or a leisurely afternoon. The surrounding area is also packed with cultural attractions and landmarks, making it easy to combine nature and sightseeing in one memorable visit.     1. La Rosaleda – Located in the southern part of Retiro Park, this beautiful rose garden features over 4,000 roses arranged in a circular layou around a charming central fountain, making it a peaceful and colourful spot to explore.

    1. Bosque del Recuerdo – This peaceful memorial was created to honour the 192 victims of the Madrid bombing on March 11th, 2004. It features 192 trees, each symbolising one of the lives lost, making it a reflective and meaningful place within Retiro Park.

    1. Real Jardin Botanico – Located just outside Retiro Park, this beautiful botanical garden showcases an impressive variety of plants and tranquil scenery.     1. Museo Nacional del Prado – The largest art gallery in Spain has one of the finest collections of European paintings in the world. It is definitely a must visit when visiting Madrid.  It features around 8,600 paintings and 700 sculptures, including the world famous Garden of Earthly Delights. Admission is €15, reduced is €7.50, with free admission in the last two hours of each day, although this is risky as large crowds tend to form. Tickets can be purchased from the official website.     1. Ikono Madrid – This immersive and interactive art experience lets visitors wander through 12 creative, themed rooms filled with light, colour, texture and sensory surprises. General Admission varies by day, but is approximately €17. To check the prices and tickets, visit the official website. Opening hours are 10 am to 9 pm.

    1. Museo Reina Sofia – Located near Ikono Madrid, this modern art museum features several renowened paintings, including pieces by Salvador Dali and Maruja Mallow. General admission is €112, reduced admission is €6. The Museum is closed on Tuesdays. On Mondays and Wednesday to Saturdays, the opening hours are 10 am to 9pm, and on Sunday, the opening hours are 10 am to 2:30 pm. Free admission is available during thelast two hours of each day, and tickets, both paid and free, can be purchased from the official website.

  1. Museo de la Luz – This innovative light museum features fascinating displays that showcase the history and science of light through a visual and educational experience. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 11 am to 9 pm, Saturday and public holiday from 10 am to 9 pm, and Sunday from 10 am to 8 pm. Tickets can be purchased from the official website. The admission is broken down as follows:
      • General Admission is €14 on weekdays, and €15 otherwise;

      • Admission for children aged 4 to 12 is €10 on weekdays, and €11 otherwise;

      • Reduced admission is €11 on weekdays, and €12 otherwise;

      • Children Aged 0 to 3 have free admission.
    1. OXO Video Game Museum – This unique museum features a wide range of playable video games, from early versions of Pong to futuristic VR experiences. Visitors can enjoy numerous consoles and arcade machines throughout the museum. Opening hours are daily from 11 am to 10 pm. General admission is €21, with reduced admission also available. Tickets are usually cheaper when visiting earlier in the day rather than in the evening. Tickets can be purchased both in person and through the official website.

Theme Parks and Zoo

1- Parque Warner

The main Warner Bros. park of Europe, this is Madrid’s largest theme park and is a must-visit for both thrill seekers and fans of Warner Bros. classics such as DC movies, Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry, to name a few. This park offers a great mix of attractions, from family fun rides perfect for children experiencing the magic of their favourite cartoon shows, to high adrenaline roller coaters designed for adults looking for a serious thrill.

This area also hosts an amazing water park – Parque Warner Beach. It is perfect for travellers looking to cool off in the summer months while enjoying some of the best water slides in Spain, all themed around popular Warner Bros movies. This park is accessible by both bus and train. The recommended route is to take bus 412 from the Villaverde Bajo interchange. 2 - Parque de Atraciones

Located just a short metro journey from the centre of Madrid, Parque de Atracciones is a smaller theme park than Parque Warner, but still picked with exciting rides and thrills. It is perfect for visitors of all ages, with Nickelodeon World catering to younger guests and more thrilling roller coasters available for teens and adults.

To reach this theme park, simply take Metro Line 10 and get off at Batán. It is always ideal to check the official website for both the opening calendar and to purchase your tickets.

3 - Zoo Aquarium de Madrid

This attraction includes both a zoo and an aquarium, offering an impressive collection of wildlife, including elephants, bears, and tigers. 

To reach the Zoo, simply take the Metro Line 10 or 5 and get off at Casa de Campo.

The zoo is open daily, with opening hours listed on the official website. It is highly recommended to purchase your tickets in advance to avoid queues and secure your preferred visiting time.

Sporting Events

    1. Real Madrid – Arguably one of the biggest football clubs in the world, the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium is a must visit for football fans. If you are plan to attend a match, try to schedule your visit when Real Madrid have a home game. Tickets to matches are available on their official website. You can also take a stadium tour of the Santiago Bernabeu to see their tropheys and dressing rooms. Tickets to the stadium tour can be found here. Real Madrid however is not only a top football team but also one of Europe’s best basketball, featuring several playerss with NBA experience. Notably, Luka Doncic played for Real Madrid before joining the NBA. Basketball fans can attend a game of this prestigious team, with tickets available on the  official website.

    1. Athletico de Madrid – Another top Spanish club, Athletico de Madrid offers an incredible atmosphere during home matches and a stadium tour that is generally more affordable than Real Madrid’s. If you are a football fan and cannot catch a Real Madrid game during your visit, it is worth checking whether Athletico Madrid have a home match. In addition to the two main teams, Madrid is home to several lesser known teams, including Rayo Vallecano, Getafe and Leganes, which also compete in Spain’s top flight. Football fans may want to check their fixtures, as there could be exciting matchups against teams like Barcelona or Sevilla during your visit. However tickets for home games for these smaller Madrid clubs can be more difficult to obtain due to limited capacity in their smaller stadiums.

Shopping

Madrid is home to a wide variety of shopping streets, local markets and modern malls, making it a fantastic destination for shoppers of all tastes. Whether you’re looking for international brands, unique boutiques, traditional products or lively market experiences, the city offers something for everyone.

    1. Gran Via – Madrid’s main shopping street is lined with an impressive selection of stores, including a five-storey Primark, Lefties, H&M, Foot Locker, and Zara. It is one of the best places in the city for fashion, accessories and high-street brands.

    1. Centro Comercial La Gavia – This largest shopping complex in Madrid, offering 132 shops and restaurants. Popular stores include Primark, JD Sports, Lefties, Kiko Milano and even an IKEA. The mall also features a cinema, a wide range of dining options such as Five Guys, McDonalds and Summum Buffet. With its spacious walkways, it is ideal for a relaxed day of shopping. Altough it is located on the outskirts of the city, it is easily accessible via Metro Line 1, getting off at Las Suertes station. Opening hours are 10 am to 10 pm.

    1. El Rastro – This famous flea market offers a unique experience, complete with live music, food stands and a wide variety of products, both new and second-hand. It is a vibrant and lively spot where you can browse for souvenirs, antiques, clothing and local crafts. The market is held on Sundays and public holidays, roughly from 9 am to 3 pm.

Restaurants

Madrid offers a wide range of restaurants and cafes, perfect for whether you are stopping for a quick snack or enjoying a full meal.

    1. Gran Via – Madrid’s main shopping street and its surroundings offer a variety of dining options. For breakfast, try La Panera Rosa, a charming spot with pink-themed decor. For quick bites, there are fast-food options such as Five Guys, McDonald’s and KFC. For a more traditional meal, reasaurants like La Tagliatella, Beata Pasta – Gran Via, and La Sirena Verde provide a great choice of dishes.
    2. Plaza Mayor – Similar to Gran Via, this area offers several options for both quick bites and sit down meals. For fast food, you can find places such as Little Caesar, Popeyes, and Taco Bell. For a restaunt experience, nearby options include  St. James Paella Madrid and ImPasta Sol. Just a short walk away, you’ll also find Chocolateria San Gines, Madrid’s oldest chocolate shop, famous for its delicious churros con chocolate, a must try local delicacy.
    3. Mercado de San Miguel – Located right next to Plaza Mayor, this iconic fresh food market showcases some of the very best of Spanish Cuisine. Visitors can enjoy a wide selection of tapas, seafood, pastries, and regional specialties, all in a vibrant and lively atmosphere. Opening hours are Sunday to Thursday from 10 am to 12 am, and Friday, Saturday and holiday eves from 10 am to 1 am.
    4. Arroceria D’stapa Madrid – This restaurant located close to Plaza Mayor is perfect for those looking to taste some traditional Spanish Paella. It is highly recommended to book this restaurant in advance, but definitely worth it. The reservation can be made directly from Google maps.
    5. Tapas tours – In Madrid, there are many different tapas tours for those food enjoyers. From here you can get a highly rated tapas and wine tasting tour with a local guide, taking you across the best local places to enjoy tapas and some wine tasting.

Getting around Madrid

Madrid has an efficient and well-connected public transport system, including metro lines, buses and trains. To use public transport services, you will need a Tarjeta Multi, a contactless and transferable smart card valid for 10 years. The card costs €2.50 and can be purchased at any Metro station from the ticket machines marked with a red sticker saying “Tarjeta MULTI Disponible AQUI”, as well as from Estancos (tobacco shops).

If you plan on using the bus and metro frequently, you can load a 10 trip ticket onto the Tarjeta Multi, which is valid across all buses and Metros except the Airport lines. Alternatively, visitors may opt for the Tourist Travel Pass, available for 1, 2, 3, 5, or 7 days, which also loads onto the Tarjeta Multi and allows unlimited travel within the selected zones. It is important to make sure that you purchase the Travel Pass for the correct zones. For more information or to manage your card, you can download the Travel Card app on both Google Play and the App store.

To easily navigate around Madrid, it is also highly recommended to use the Citymapper app, which provides real-time schedules and route planning. Citymapper is also available on both Google Play and the App Store.

3-day itinerary

Below is a suggested 3-day itinerary designed so you can experience Madrid’s main sights at a comfortable pace. The days can be adjusted depending on the opening hours of the attractions or your personal preferences.

Day 1 - Centro and Surrounding Museums

Morning: Start your day with breakfast in the Gran Via area. After eating, take a short stroll to Puerta del Sol, one of Madrid’s most iconic squares. Continue walking toward Plaza Mayor, where you can enjoy lunch after exploring the beautiful square and its surroundings.

Afternoon: After lunch, head to Museo de las Ilusiones, and then visit the Ikono Madrid. These two museums offer a fun and interactive way to end your first day in the city. If you are an art enthusiast, you can also visit the Museo Reina Sofia, which is located near Ikono. You can also visit the Museo de la Luz instead of Ikono. Alternatively, football fans can choose to do a stadium tour of either Santiago Bernabeu or the Wanda Metropolitano.

Evening: Head back to your hotel and enjoy dinner either nearby or at any of the spots mentioned in the restaurant section.

Day 2 - Retiro Park

Morning: Start your day with breakfast and head to Cibeles, where you can admire the iconic Fuente de Cibeles, and the stunning Palacio de Cibeles. From there, walk to Puerta de Alcala and enter Retiro Park. Begin your visit at the Estanque Grande de El Retiro, then continue on to the Palacio de Cristal, La Rosaleda and finally Bosque del Recuerdo.

Afternoon: Following your visit to Retiro Park, stop at a nearby fast-food spot or restaurant for a quick bite. Options include McDonald’s, KFC and Museo del Jamon – Paseo del Prado. After lunch, visit Real Jardin Botanico, and then continue to the Prado Museum. Make sure to purchase tour Prado tickets in advance.

If you prefer, you can swap the morning and afternoon activities. such that the Prado museum is visited before Retiro Park. Alternatively, if you wish to take advantage of the museum’s free entry hours, you can visit the Prado on Day 3 after finishing your shopping in Gran Via. In this case, you could also start the day with a visit to Madrid Zoo, and then continue to Cibeles to follow the rest of the itinerary.

Evening: Return to your hotel and then take the Metro to Sol to see the squares from day 1 beautifully lit up at night. Visit both Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor, and enjoy dinner at one of the restaurants at Plaza Mayor, or at Merado de San Miguel for a lively dining expereince.

Day 3 - Centro and Shopping

Morning: Start your day with breakfast, then visit the Basilica of San Francisco El Grande. Next, head to the Catedral de Santa Maria la Real de la Alumdena, and finish the morning with a guided tour of Palacio Real de Madrid.

Afternoon: After your morning visits, head to Temple of Debod to explore this ancient Egyptian temple located in the heart of Madrid. From there, make your way to Plaza de Espana, and continue on to Gran Via, and enjoy lunch at nearby cafe or fast food spot, whilst enjoying the rest of your afternoon shopping

Evening: Enjoy dinner at one of the top Gran Via restaurants.
